Laser Lights and Cats

(AsiaTheCat.com) Our YouTube video of Asia chasing a laser light has been getting a lot of views and is in the top 10 viewed pet videos in several countries even though its only been up two days. On the subject of laser lights and cats, today I received an email from a guy named Fred that I want to publicly respond to. The email stated:

“Don’t you know that you are abusing the animal and can cause eye damage? Very sad. I pity you.”

Fred, I did my research before using a laser light for Asia to chase. The simple fact is that if you are exposing a laser light directly into a cat’s eyes for several seconds, yes you can damage it. The same goes for humans. But we don’t do that. No cat lover does that. A cat’s eyes cannot be damaged from chasing a laser light.  The laser light is one of the most popular cat toys around because it keeps them entertained and provides them with a lot of fun exercise. In addition, many veterinarians will recommend a laser light for various therapies. Others veterinarians recommend it for regular exercise. Laser lights have won many awards in the pet industry for their safe and entertaining value. Feel free to research this as it is very enlightening.

Asia the Cat has Cataracts

(AsiaTheCat.com) Asia is back from the Opthamologist and the diagnosis is that she has a Cataract in one eye and partial Cataract in the other. They don’t know if she can see out of the eye that has the full Cataract. There was also concern that she might have neurological issues and want her to see a Neurologist before prescribing a treatment for the Cataracts. They believe that in the time she was abandoned, she faced a lot of trauma.

As anyone who has a special needs cat or rescue cat with problems can attest to, there will be some nice Veterinarian bills headed our way. But a pet is part of the family and as such you give them the best treatment you can to make sure they can live as happy a life as possible.

Asia Headed to the Cat Opthamologist

(AsiaTheCat.com) Tomorrow will be the first day Asia has been away from home since she was adopted two weeks ago. There were a couple of medical concerns early on. The first was her serious case of ear mites. The second was possible neurological issues. The third was a “cloudy” right eye. The image below shows you how different her two eyes are. It doesn’t, however, show the “glaze” over her right eye.

So on Thursday, Asia will be headed to a “cat Opthamologist”. We’ll provide an update on what the vet says upon Asia’s return.

Cat Tips – Taking Care of a New Kitten

(AsiaTheCat.com) When we brought Asia home, Salem Friends of Felines provided us with a sheet of tips for taking care of a new kitty. We will be sharing these tips with you in the weeks to come. Here are their first set of tips:

– It is most important to introduce your cat to where their litter box, food, and water will be kept. Introduce and reinforce the location as many times as necessary. Changing the location may confuse the cat and cause accidents. Be sure that if there is another cat in the home that it is not keeping your new kitty from access to the litter box (Asia Note: Asia has her own litter box). Keep the litter box clean. Many cats will not use a dirty litter box. Most of all be calm and patient with any issues involving the litter box.

– Many cats are afraid of the noise from the washer and dryer. If the litter box is placed in the laundry room, they might not want to use it and then “potty” elsewhere. Bad habits can be difficult to break.

– Covered litter boxes may also be a problem with some cats. We recommend using an open litter pan in the beginning. Make sure you use an adequately sized litter box, proportionate to the size of your new kitty, going up in size as the kitten grows.

– If another cat or dog has urinated in your home, your new kitty will be drawn to that location. Nature’s Miracle, or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, and a thorough scrubbing is a good way to eliminate previous scents.

– We recommend that water and food bowls not be plastic, as plastic has been shown to cause chin conditions and can emit dangerous chemicals into food and water. Ceramic, metal and glass are best.

Asia Notes
With Asia, we provided her with her own litter box in its own location away from the other cat. In our first two weeks of owning her, she’s only had one accident.

The Story of Asia the Cat

(AsiaTheCat.com) Asia is a short haired domestic Tortoiseshell cat. She was found abandoned in a field in Salem, Oregon on December 27, 2010. She was rescued and taken to Salem Friends of Felines, who named her Asia. It was discovered that she had a serious case of ear mites resulting in a double ear infection, which also caused some balancing issues with her. She was adopted into our family on January 2, 2010.

During the next several years we will be reporting on the progress of Asia here as well as providing you with videos to see how this rescued kitten progresses.

Asia now has an older cat sister – Sassy. She also has a “dog sister and brother” – a Retriever/Chow mix named “Belle” (a rescued dog) and Chewbacca the Chubby Chihuahua (another rescue dog).
